Switching from Stripe to Understory Pay

Complete the switch to Understory Pay — including what happens to Adyen access, your transaction emails and your bookkeeper's reports.

Understory Pay is now available as our fully integrated payment solution.
If you are currently using Stripe, here's what you need to know about switching.

Do I have to switch from Stripe?

Stripe is still supported.

However, we recommend using Understory Pay as it is fully integrated into your Understory back office and simplifies payment management.

You can choose when to activate Understory Pay.

Do I get a login to Adyen?

No. Adyen is the payment provider behind Understory Pay, but your Understory Pay account is managed entirely by Understory. You will not receive Adyen credentials, and there is no Adyen dashboard for you to log in to.

Everything you need for bookkeeping is available in your Understory back office:

  • Fees per transaction — Transactions Report, column paymentFee. This already includes the Adyen acquiring cost; there is no separate provider fee on top.

  • Money paid into your bank — Company Settings → Payment (payout overview), and the transfer rows in the Transactions Report.

See How to Generate a Transactions Report for the full column reference.

If your accountant or auditor needs documentation that these reports do not cover, contact us in the chat and we will help.

I stopped receiving transaction emails after switching — why?

Payment notification emails from Stripe were sent by Stripe, not by Understory. Once Understory Pay is active, Stripe no longer processes your payments, so those emails stop.

To get an equivalent overview, use one of these instead:

  • Understory notifications — see Notifications in Understory to configure which booking and sales alerts you receive.

  • Transactions Report — generate it for any date range whenever you need it.

What happens to my existing Stripe account?

Your Stripe account remains active and unchanged.

Understory does not have access to your Stripe account, and your transaction history will remain available inside Stripe.

What happens to previous transactions?

All historical Stripe transactions stay in Stripe.

New transactions will be processed through Understory Pay once it is activated.

Can I use Stripe and Understory Pay at the same time?

You can activate Understory Pay and choose when to transition fully.

If you are unsure about your setup, we recommend contacting our support team for guidance.

Do I need to close my Stripe account?

If you decide to fully move to Understory Pay, you will need to close your Stripe account directly with Stripe.

Understory cannot close or manage Stripe accounts on your behalf.

What changes for my bookkeeper or finance team?

If your bookkeeper previously accessed Stripe for reports and reconciliation:

  • They will now use your Understory back office instead

  • Invite them as a user

  • Assign them the Finance permission scope

They do not need — and cannot be given — access to Adyen. All new payment reports are available directly in Understory.

Is there any downtime when switching?

No.

Once Understory Pay is approved and activated, it becomes available in your checkout automatically.

There is no interruption to your booking flow.

How do I switch?

  1. Activate Understory Pay from Company settings → Integrations

  2. Complete the verification process (KYC)

  3. Once approved, payments will automatically run through Understory Pay

You can read the full activation guide here: How to activate Understory Pay. The guide also explains how to verify that activation is complete.
