Connect to GetYourGuide (GYG)

How to connect your Understory account to GetYourGuide (GYG)

Updated in the last hour

Connect your Understory account to GetYourGuide (GYG) to automatically sync availability and receive bookings from one of the world's largest experience marketplaces. When a guest books on GetYourGuide, it shows up in Understory just like any other booking — no manual entry needed.

Before you start

You'll need two things to complete the setup:

  1. A GetYourGuide Supplier account. If you don't have one yet, you can sign up at getyourguide.supply.

  2. Your experiences created in both Understory and GetYourGuide. The integration links existing experiences between the two systems — it doesn't create them for you. You can connect your account first and set up experiences in GetYourGuide afterwards, but you'll need them in both places before you can finish the integration.

How to connect GetYourGuide

  1. Go to Company settings > Integrations — find GetYourGuide in the list and click on it.

  2. Click Connect — a dialog explains the prerequisites. When you're ready, click Ready to connect. You'll be redirected to authorize the connection with your GetYourGuide account.

  3. You're connected — once authorized, you'll see a list of all your live Understory experiences. Now you need to set up each experience you want to sync.

How to set up an experience

For each experience you want available on GetYourGuide, you'll need to:

  1. Map your tickets

  2. Create product options (with product IDs)

  3. Enter the product IDs in GetYourGuide

Step 1: Map your tickets

Click on an experience from the list, then click + Product ID. If you haven't mapped your tickets yet, you'll be asked to do so first.

GetYourGuide uses fixed ticket types (Adult, Child, Youth, Senior, etc.) instead of custom names. You need to tell Understory which of your tickets corresponds to which GetYourGuide type.

If your experience sells tickets individually (per person):

  • Each of your Understory tickets maps to one GetYourGuide type

  • Adult is required — at least one ticket must be mapped to Adult

  • Each GetYourGuide type can only be used once — this is a GetYourGuide requirement. If you have two ticket types that are both "adult-like", you'll need to pick different categories for them (e.g., Adult and Senior)

  • You can set a ticket to Don't sync if you don't want it available on GetYourGuide — it will still be bookable through your Understory storefront

If your experience sells group tickets:

  • Select the ticket you want to be purchased when groups book via GetYourGuide

  • This ticket will be mapped to the GROUP type in GetYourGuide

Tip: If you only have one ticket type, the mapping is done automatically.

Step 2: Create product options

After mapping tickets, you'll create product options.

Product options are how GetYourGuide organizes variations of your experience — for example, different locations, different languages, or other variations. Each product option needs a unique product ID to sync with Understory.

For each product option:

  1. Choose a name — a default name is suggested based on your location and experience name, but you can customize it.

  2. Select a location — pick which of your Understory locations this product option is for.

  3. Select languages — choose which languages this product option covers. Pick No language if you haven't set a language on your events in Understory — GetYourGuide will receive availability for all events without a specified language.

  4. Click Complete — a product ID is generated.

Step 3: Enter the product ID in GetYourGuide

After creating a product option, you'll see a dialog with your product ID. Copy it — you'll need to enter it in GetYourGuide.

  1. Copy the product ID by clicking the copy icon.

  2. Navigate to Products > your product > Product Options > the product option > Connectivity Settings.

  3. Select Understory as the reservation system.

  4. Paste the product ID into the External product ID field.

  5. Repeat for each product option you created.

Important: The product ID is what links your Understory experience to GetYourGuide. Without it, availability won't sync and bookings won't flow through.

You can always find your product IDs later on the experience detail page — click the copy icon next to any product option to copy its ID.

How it works once connected

Availability syncs instantly. When events are created, updated, or booked in Understory, the updated availability is pushed to GetYourGuide immediately. GetYourGuide also polls your availability on a regular schedule as a backup.

Bookings flow into Understory. When a guest books your experience on GetYourGuide, the booking appears in your normal bookings list in Understory automatically. You'll see a label indicating the booking came from GetYourGuide.

GetYourGuide handles guest communication. Confirmation emails, reminders, and other guest-facing messages for GetYourGuide bookings are sent by GetYourGuide, not Understory. You won't see Understory sending emails for these bookings — this is expected.

Prices are managed in GetYourGuide. Set your prices in GetYourGuide's portal. Prices in Understory and GetYourGuide are independent — they don't need to match.

Things to know

  • Experiences must exist in both systems. The integration syncs between them — it doesn't create experiences for you on either platform.

  • Each product option needs its own product ID. If you offer an experience at multiple locations, in multiple languages, or as different variations, create a product option for each one in Understory and enter the corresponding product ID in GetYourGuide.

  • Ticket mapping changes require attention. If you add or change ticket types on an experience in Understory, you'll need to update the ticket mapping. Go to the experience detail page and click Ticket settings to review.

  • Only time-based experiences are supported. Experiences that run at specific times work with GetYourGuide. Full-day activities without a specific start time are not currently supported.

How to disconnect

If you need to disconnect your GetYourGuide account:

  1. Go to Company settings > Integrations > GetYourGuide

  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top right

  3. Click Disconnect

Note: Disconnecting will reset your GetYourGuide setup. Your product options and ticket mappings will need to be configured again if you reconnect.
