This can help keep your listed ticket prices lower and clearly show guests the breakdown of charges at checkout.
Additionally, it introduces flexibility, allowing businesses to decide whether the booking fee is absorbed internally or transferred directly to guests, which is applied as a flat 3.25% rate.
What is the Booking Fee?
The booking fee is an additional charge applied during transactions. Understory offers flexibility in deciding whether this fee is paid by your business or passed on to the customer. This feature was introduced to provide businesses with more control over their pricing structure.
How to pass on booking fees to your guests
Requirements: You need permission to manage sales settings.
Click Sales in the navigation bar – Access your bookings and fee settings
Click the Manage button on the right – Open sales settings
Find the section 'Pass on booking fees to your guests' – Locate booking fee options
Toggle the switch to turn it on – Activated pass-through of fees
Choose the applied VAT rate for fees – Select the correct VAT rate from the dropdown
Once enabled, your guests will see the Understory booking fee added to their total during checkout, including VAT.
How this setting works
When you activate "Pass on booking fees to your guests," Understory adds the booking fee (plus VAT, if applicable) to each guest's order at checkout. This keeps your base ticket price unchanged and makes it clearer for guests how much they're being charged and why. You can select the VAT rate that applies to your business, ensuring you stay compliant. Your own payout remains for the ticket value, as your guests pay the booking fee directly to Understory.
